A registry is a list of gifts a couple asks their guests to give them as wedding presents. Most couples register for both physical and cash contributions. If you’re wondering how much money you can expect from your cash wedding registry, then, as you can imagine, that’s a bit of an ambiguous question.

However, we have collated the data and tried to average the numbers to give you a rough guide. We’ll compare the average amount of money given per guest by those who registered for physical gifts versus those who registered for cash gifts, as well as looking at differences between countries for average figures throughout the world and, most importantly, numbers that you can apply to your own wedding.

What Is a Cash Wedding Registry and How Does It Work?

First of all, let’s clear up a few questions you may have. A wedding cash registry moves away from the traditional way of receiving physical gifts. Instead, as the name suggests, this allows guests to give you cash for things like your honeymoon and other non-physical items.

There are a few different ways this can work, but the most common way is via online wedding registries platforms. The couple set up an account and then add gifts they would like to receive money towards. These could be things like their honeymoon fund, a down payment on a house, or even just contributions to their savings.

Guests can then log onto the site and choose which gift they would like to contribute. They will be asked to enter their payment details, and once the transaction has gone through, the money will go straight into the couple’s registry account.

How Much Money Can You Expect to Receive From Each Guest?

Many couples are now choosing cash registries over physical ones, and it’s not hard to see why. With the average cost of a wedding in the US being $33,391, there’s no doubt that couples could do with all the help they can get.

So, how much can you expect your guests to contribute? Well, the average cash gift is $168. Comparatively, the average physical gift is only $106. So, you can see that guests are generally more generous when giving cash through a registry platform.

Here’s the data, broken down for each currency/country.

Average Wedding Gift Size per Country/Currency:

  • Australia - $252AUD
  • Canada - $232CAD
  • Denmark - 1108DKK
  • Europe - €345
  • United Kingdom - £138
  • New Zealand - $209NZD
  • United States  - $231

It’s also worth noting that Hitchd has one of the highest registry platforms averages. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to set up your registry, you know where to go!

How Much Money Can You Expect to Receive From the Registry in Total?

Now that we know how much each guest is likely to contribute, we can start to get an idea of how much you might receive.

The average number of guests at a wedding is around 40. So, if we take the average cash gift per guest and multiply it by the number of guests, we get a total of $6,720.

Of course, this is just an estimate as not every guest will give you money, and some will provide more than the average amount. However, it’s a good starting point to give you an idea of what you could expect from your cash registry.

Here’s the data for each country on average registry value after your wedding day.

Average Registry Value per Wedding:

  • Australia - $9,376 AUD
  • Canada - $6,760 CAD
  • Denmark - 50,700 DKK
  • Europe - €11,000 EUR
  • United Kingdom - £5,000 GBP
  • New Zealand - $8,000 NZD
  • United States - $6,583 USD

All of the above numbers have been calculated within a range of 90% of Hitchd’s data. This means that the bottom 5% and the top 5% of registries haven’t been included, so the data and numbers reflect what you expect. We don’t want to include registries that haven’t been used, and we don’t want to include registries with tremendous values gone through them, as this will inflate the numbers.

Include at Least 6 Gifts

The average gift to a honeymoon registry rises by 38.5 percent when there are more presents and activities on the list than a single honeymoon fund gift.

We have noticed from the data that the sweet spot has over six items to choose from for guests. This allows your guests to pick and choose what they would like to give you and contribute to different things if they wish.

It also allows you to add a mix of physical and non-physical gifts so that there is something for everyone. And, of course, it means more money in your pocket. It’s worth noting that you can over-face guests by adding too much to the list. Try to stick to between 6-12 things if possible.

To Wrap It Up

Your wedding registry is a great way to help you save up for things you might not be able to afford otherwise. And, with cash registries becoming increasingly popular, it’s easy to see why.

You can see above that the average gift per person at a wedding (in the US) is $168. We can calculate that this equates to an average registry value post-wedding of $6,583. Check out our data above if you’re looking for a different country.

If you’re thinking of setting up a cash registry, Hitchd is the perfect platform. We have some of the highest average gifts per guest out of all the registry platforms, making it easy for your guests to contribute.
